Prevention and Education

The Prevention and Education Program is designed to focus on the major social and psychological factors that contribute to the initiation and early stages of substance use or abuse. It is a personal growth and exploration program for young people that will look at important factors that may lead to use or abuse of one or more drugs by teaching a combination of health information, general life skills, and drug resistance skills.

Objectives:

To develop sufficient trust of the group to allow for an honest sharing of feelings and attitudes, and to learn how to carry this trust into everyday life.

To grow in self-acceptance and self-respect.

To increase understanding of the causes and consequences of substance abuse.

To increase ability to make informed and responsible decisions.

To become tolerant of others; to respect differences.

To become less isolated by discovering that others in the group have similar problems.

To improve general social skills.

To increase ability to resist peer pressure to smoke, drink or use other drugs.

To increase general assertive skills.
To learn specific ways of applying in everyday life what is learned in the group.

Eligibility

Young adults under the age of 18 a with risk factors to include truancy, school failure, and parents/caregivers who are addicted to substances and/or young adults who have tried a substance for the first time but who are not addicted.
Members must have the written consent of a parent or guardian to participate in the group.
Members must come to all sessions and participate by sharing of themselves and giving feedback to others in the group.

Members must maintain confidentiality at all times outside of the group.

Members will conduct themselves in a respectful manner.

Members may decide on their own specific goals and on the issues they want and are willing to explore.

Payment for Services

There is no fee for services to those who qualify. An eligibility screening will be given prior to a young adult beginning the group.
